In this class you will use pencil, charcoal, and pastel to learn basic forms, one and two point perspective, negative space, tonal value and proportion. Use these fundamentals to draw anything. Drawing accurately is the basis for all other fine art mediums. You need to be able to accurately sketch out your canvas or paper before going on the next step.

    Anne Jurgens, award winning artist and certified instructor, will lead you through the wonders of watercolor. This class is intended for beginning and intermediate students with emphasis on expressing ourselves with paint. Beginning students will learn basic watercolor techniques including how to apply flat washes, graded washes, and glazes, wet in wet and dry brushing techniques. We will learn about composition, values, line, and color as elements in a painting. For intermediate students who wish to choose their own subjects, instruction will be individualized.- You can read the artist's bio and see more of her work in the Gallery section.

    • Paper: Arches 11x14 100% rag, 140 Cold Press. and/ or Strathmore Series 500 mixed media
    • Brushes: Sable is best. Synthetic is okay Rounds #1, #5, #8 Flats: 1/2 inch, 1 inch, 2 inch, Rigger
    • Water Container - One for clear, one to clean brushes can be as simple as a couple of
      cottage cheese containers.
    • Paper towels - to soak up excess water
    • Pencil - #2
    • Pallet : Make it large enough to hold 16 colors and have space to mix paints
    • Paints: Here are the basics. You can buy more, but we can build almost any color
      from these..
    • These consist of both cool and warm in the primary colors enabling us to
      be able to make the colors we need. Buy your colors In tubes or in cubes. Any brand,
      except where noted you usually get better results with Professional grade, you can use Cotman when brand isn't noted.
    • Yellows: Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Yellow Ochre, Raw Sienna*
      Reds: Cadmium Red Light, Cadmium Red Medium, Alizarine Crimson, Permanent Rose
      Blues: Cobalt Blue, Winsor Newton Ultramarine Blue
      Others: Winsor Newton Sap Green, Winsor Newton Burnt Sienna
    • Waterproof board - To tape your painting to

    Course Description:

    In this class we’ll explore materials, fundamentals, and best practices of oil painting, with an emphasis on direct or “alla prima” techniques. Color mixing and creating a range of colors from a limited palette will be taught. For students with previous experience in color mixing, a more complex palette will be used. Paint from your own sketches, photos, or studio still life. We’ll have demos in each class that will cover various topics such as various ways to start an oil painting, oiling out, stretching a canvas, preparing a panel, glazing, and varnishing.

    • Supply List:
    • If you already have  oil paints, please bring them to class and we will work with your selection. If you don’t have supplies, here is the  minimum to get started!
    • Paints
      Napthol Red (or equivalent) -
      Ultramarine Blue -
      Hansa Yellow Light (or equivalent)
      Titanium White
    • Surfaces
      Canvas panel or gessoed panels in a variety of sizes, preferably 11 x 14 and smaller. Since we will be working alla prima, aim for smaller sizes if possible 8x 10 is wonderful.

    Flower City Figure Study is a Fun & Friendly Drawing Group that meets every Monday Night (6-9pm). We are dedicated to trying to capture the nude human figure on paper - Artists of all levels and abilities are welcome! We meet in the upstairs 3000 sq. ft. studio of The Art Stop, located at 1822 Penfield Road, Penfield, NY 14526.
    The Studio can handle up to 30 artists - 12 work stations in the form of a drawing horse-style bench as well as adjustable easels and tables with chairs. We provide drawing boards and personal lighting for your use in the studio or you are always welcome to bring your own. Artists should bring their own paper and drawing medium and/or come early and get these at The Art Stop prior to a session.
    Currently we rotate thru 15 male and female models of all shapes and sizes to give variety to the artists to study and capture in artistic form. Poses start with quick gesture and then move on to short poses of 5-15 minutes and then longer poses of 20-35 minutes.
    Cost:
    $7/Hr ($20 for the whole night)
    $6/Hr Paid in Advance ($18 for the whole night)
    $5/Session Student Rate with a Valid ID.
    Paid in Advance Savings Punch cards can be purchased in advance/at the door and also be used the same night.
    $55 (which covers 3 full sessions) or $90 (which covers 5 full sessions)
    Punch Cards can also be used on an hourly basis.

    Join Carole Agosto to create this beautiful look in watercolor pen & ink. In this course students will learn to draw objects to landscapes by using pen and adding watercolor to bring the picture to life. Students will improve their skills, and learn how to mix colors. A printed photos will be provided for students in advance. We will work from a variety of photos such as buildings, cars, landscapes, etc.  There will be demonstrations through out the weeks.     Always wanted to Paint, but weren't sure where to begin? In this class, you will learn the fundamentals of watercolor painting. Learn layout, composition, color theory, technique, style, etc. Bring to life the world around you in beautiful, full color.

    Young artists will enjoy this lighthearted class. A huge variety of projects makes this class fun over and over again. Basic art concepts are introduced at an age-appropriate level, preparing the student for creative art class, when they are ready. A smock or apron is recommended for this class. Class limit 10

    Join Accomplished Instructor Colette Savage in this versatile beautiful medium. Get a beautiful softness similar to a Degas', or photographic realism. Pastels are considered a form of painting, yet you have the control of a stick or pencil, making it more like drawing. Learn about different substrates to paint on and different types of pastels and how they react. Beginner to intermediate.  Please feel free to bring along any pastels, paper...which you currently own to our first class.  A materials list is attached, but DO NOT purchase any new materials until AFTER the first class.

    • Soft Pastels- Your choice of brands, with a large assortment of colors and value (dark and light). If you already own pastels, bring what you have.
    • Pastel Paper- Your choice of brand and type
