Limited palette- Lighthouse Landscape w/Paul Allen Taylor

    9:30 am-4:30 pm
    09/27/2025
The Art Stop Studio, 2nd floor
1822 Penfield Road Penfield NY 14526

    Instructor Paul Allen Taylor

Watercolor Workshop – Paul Allen Taylor

    September 27th 2025, 9:30-4:30

    Cost $80

In this workshop, students will paint an 11 x 15 landscape guided by this
value sketch. When working with value (the light and dark of color) one can
better clarify the shapes and important parts of a painting. (Color does not
yield value) Using a limited palette of Red Yellow and Blue abbreviates the
mixing of colors. The color names are Aliz. Crimson, Cad Yellow Medium
    and Ultra Marine Blue.
The workshop opens with a brief plan discussion of the painting approach
and color choices. (As Paul has not painted this subject, he will talk about
options to consider when beginning a painting). Afterward, Paul guides you
in the drawing process until we are certain it’s ready for painting. After a
lunch break, we will all paint together in the afternoon. Paul will explain
and demonstrate his damp paper method as well. During the painting
process, he will stop, you work and then he continues and so on.
See the supplies list for specific items.

Watercolor supplies – Limited palette- Lighthouse Landscape

    • Watercolor paper: Arches 140 lb Cold Pressed. Buy a full sheet 22 x 30 and cut it into quarters. Bring two for class, (one as a spare)
    • PAINT: Bring tubes of paint, not pans or dried out paint. This is most important . We will use three colors. Alizarin Crimson, Ultra Marine Blue and Cad Yellow Medium
    • BRUSHES: FLATS: ½”, ¾”, 1” ROUNDS: #6, #8, and #4 Liner brush.
    • Others will be available as necessary.
    • Note about purchasing brushes: Flat brushes are best when the length and width are equal (Bright). Longer brush hairs are too floppy when wet. Preferable brands are Richeson, Winsor Newton, and Princeton.
    • PALETTE: For this class a white ceramic plate will suffice foregoing a palette. Plates can be found at a dollar store or thrift shops. It’s important to have a generous mixing area.
    • Bring your own palette if you have one.
    • PAPER SUPPORT PANEL: (Very important) 16” x 23”. Nonabsorbent. The best materials are Plexiglas or sealed wood. Another option is a 16 x 23 painting panel for oils without canvas. (Do not bring a Masonite drawing board, foam core, or anything else that is not 12 x 16.) Paul will have one you can borrow but it’s a good thing to have one of your own.
    • CLIPS: Four (4) “Bulldog” clips or large stationary clips. No tape is necessary
    • DRAWING PAPER: Anything equal or larger than 11 x 15 for the preliminary drawing phase.
    • This can be bond paper 11 x 17 for example. The initial drawing will be on this paper before
    • transferring it to the watercolor paper.

    OTHER HANDY THINGS :

    • Paper towels
    • Clean hand towel
    • Cellulose sponge
    • 2H pencil
    • Soft eraser
    • Two plastic water containers
    • Small spritzer bottle
    • Some type of brush for dusting off erasures.
    • A wide foam brush
